Who is Thanos ? Thanos is a mutant member of the race of superhumans known as the Titanian Eternals. The character possesses abilities common to the Eternals, but amplified to a higher degree through a combination of his mutant–Eternal heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and power bestowed by the abstract entity, Death. He is obsessed with Goddess Death and has waged genocidal campaigns in an attempt to placate her. Most famously, he has attempted to conquer the universe by wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. He is the Mad Titan. He is Thanos.

Highlights

• Thanos was born to A'Lars, a member of the Titans, a race of powerful, god-like beings that evolved on the planet of Titan. He belonged to the royal family of Titan and was the adoptive brother of the Eternal Eros, who eventually left Titan.
• Thanos' name is derived from the Greek idea of Thanatos, the personification of death and oblivion. Thanos would soon live up to his ominous moniker. Starlin tapped into one of Kirby's lesser known creations in constructing Thanos' origin.
• Though Thanos was born to two Eternals (A'lars and Sui-San), his body carries the Deviant gene. That's why he has mottled purple skin and a disfigured chin whereas the rest of his family could more or less pass for human.
• Thanos concludes that other planets would eventually suffer the same fate as Titan, and believes that it is his destiny to eliminate half of the universe's population so that the survivors may thrive.
• In the comics, he wasn't killing people to make the lives of the survivors better, he did it because he was in love with the personification of Death. In short, his reasons were entirely selfish.
